  • Shearwater Aviation Museum - Centenial of Flight Report

SAM CoF year was quite busy; while the NSAHA did not meet as regularly as desired, I think the website was useful as I got hits and answered emails from individuals, industry members and schools. In that regard the collaborative website is a success.

Additionally, SAM specific projects this year included:
  • Annual spring hobby show, with 1800 in attendance over 2 days (an event record)
  • Visual Arts Nova Scotia held a regional show entitled “Flight” at SAM, opening up a relationship with VANS with plans for future collaborations
  • Restoration completed on CT-133038 in 1965 era RCN paint scheme, fitted out with baskets, reeling machines and Delmar targets (assistance on measurements and comparison inspections on the starboard equipment generously provided by ACAM! All of our 4 sets are all port-side!)
  • Restoration completed on Piasecki HUP 2 to represent an RCN HUP 3, A/C provided to SAM courtesy of CMF in 2003
  • Various aviation Special interest groups and reunions used the facility for receptions, up-spirits, memorial services, etc.
  • Geoff Bennett Canadian Collection show to open 30 Oct 2009 until end of CoF year
  • Launch of F/L David Hornell VC biography by Donald J. Neilly scheduled for 4 Nov 09
  • Installation of 3 compact mobile shelving systems for improved collections care and control
  • Swordfish exhibit in final stages of production, courtesy CoF Project Office, estimated completion Nov 09.
  • Allan Snowie replica 7/8 scale Nieuport XI landed at YAW on 27 August 09, the first fixed wing aircraft to land at our new heliport. Al left his aircraft on display for a month at SAM for a special open house event, as well as a reception held in his cross-Canada CoF flight. Definitely a highlight!

We are of course making progress on our Firefly restoration and intend to turn the engine over later this fall. While still a CoF event, in this calendar year, we are gearing up to celebrate the Canadian Naval Centennial with the flight of our FR-1 Fairey Firefly.
