405 Squadron Alert Lancaster
Crash Memorial
By Major Jason Kenny
On 31 July 1950, a 405 ‘Eagle’
Squadron Lancaster (#965) was tasked to Operation NANOOK 50, a
survey, surveillance and resupply mission in the Canadian Arctic.
Unfortunately, while attempting to drop vital supplies and mail on
Alert, the most northerly permanently inhabited station in the
world, one of the parachutes caught the aircraft controls causing it
to crash. Sadly all nine crew members perished in the crash.
Sixty years after the tragic
crash, in recognition of their courage and sacrifice, 405 Long Range Patrol Squadron
will be hosting a ceremony to unveil a memorial stone on 30 July
2010. The ceremony will be held at 14 Wing Greenwood, Nova Scotia.
The memorial stone will be placed on the Memorial Walkway next to
the Greenwood Military Aviation Museum which provides a quiet place
to contemplate and remember those that have been lost for the
greater good of our nation.
